Vancouver school board wishes for the doors to stay unlocked during school hours, so that if there was an outside threat or emergency, the children could get inside.
When I was in elementary school, our doors were locked during lunch and recess as well, which I never fully understood as a child, but it deffinately would be better to have the doors unlocked, just in case, that way when there is an emergency, the teachers can lock the doors when needed, after all the children are inside. Not only would it prevent something terrible from happening but it will also reassure parents that their children won't be trapped outside with the threat. As a kid, there is nothing more terrifying than the unknown, and if trapped outside they would have to fend for themselves if they were locked out. Not only does it give the parents a peace of mind, but it also gives the school board a quick and easy way to get the kids inside after recess or lunch break.
